Palazzo Grassi - Punta della Dogana Venice Italy

A museum website designed by users for users


Palazzo Grassi - Punta della Dogana are two museums of contemporary art located in two of the most representative buildings in Venice. These museums have been restored and set up by the Japanese architect Tadao Ando and they alternate collective and monographic exhibitions.

The vocation of the museum activity is expressed in sharing with the public the extraordinary Pinault Collection, deepening the privileged relationship that this has developed over the years with the artists, in particular, through the creation of works specially conceived for its spaces.

The design process has involved visitors, users of the community and all the staff of Palazzo Grassi - Punta della Dogana


Collaborative design

Thanks to the focus groups organized with the staff of Palazzo Grassi, the communication needs of the various museum bodies have emerged.

Through the involvement of users in comparison activities, it has been possible to obtain valuable indications that allowed us to structure a website with a correct information architecture and an effective hierarchy of the elements. The opinions collected were also used to evaluate the idea of including new sections.

2000 is the number of responses containing opinions and advices that we have collected using an online questionnaire, which has been delivered on various digital channels - website, newsletter and on social - in order to reach as many people as possible.

The fruitful collaboration with the staff of Palazzo Grassi, together with the passionate participation of users, has allowed us to identify 4 main user types.

Information architecture

The result of research work and participatory design gave us the chance to share and define the logical and semantic organizational structure of the information, content, processes and functionalities of the website.

Each macro area has been developed aiming to obtain a clear view of the hierarchy and of the interaction between the several sections.

The importance of having a clear view of the contents

The website of a museum has collected, during the years of activity, contents produced during the past exhibitions that were organized according to logics that do not correspond to the needs of a new information architecture.

It is therefore important to obtain a clear view of all the contributions present through a content inventory that allows both to analyze the presence and quality of the contents of each page, and to define the additions to be produced.

From prototyping via wireframe to HTML

Wireframe

It means creating a model of how the contents will be arranged on different pages. It is essential to understand what the user-interaction processes with the interface and the main navigation flows will be.

In this project, we opted for a design with a low-fi wireframe (with low definition of details) and then proceeding directly with a HTML prototype.

Visual design

In close collaboration with the Tassinara / Rivetta studio, we have created the graphic design of the pages in line with the corporate communication of Palazzo Grassi - Punta della Dogana.

The user testing phase is fundamental to understand if what has been designed and implemented works and satisfies the users


User Testing

The evaluation of the users makes possible the evaluation of the quality of the project adding the chance to identify further areas for improvement.

We did a usability test two weeks before and two months after go-live, obtaining, in both tests, deeply valuable information to improve the user experience.

Collaboration, creativity and commitment: the ingredients immortalized in the photogallery

Collaboration is a keyword to ensure the success of the project. Through the visits, the moments of sharing and the teamwork, the feeling that bloomed between us and the staff of the museum was immediately clear. The result? A great job was done.
